F5 BIG-IP LTM VE on VMware Workstation. Initial configuration. [SOLVED]

Here is an example of installation and initial configuration the main product from F5 that we can use in our Lab environment - “F5 BIG-IP® Local Traffic Manager™ (LTM) Virtual Edition (VE)”.

How to get

Go to www.f5.com > Free Trial > BIG-IP LTM VE. You will need to create an account to be able to download BIGIP-11.3.0.39.0-scsi.ova (~700MB).

There you will get the license file also by pressing “Generate Registration Key”. You will get a key(s) in your email in 5 minutes.

How to install

Here are official specifications:

• Supported Hypervisors: VMware ESXi 5.1 and 5.5, vCloud Director 5.1
• BIG-IP Version: VE Trial 11.3.0 hotfix 1 (Release Notes)
• Maximum L4/L7 Throughput: 1 Mbps
• Disk Space Required: 18 GB
• Memory Required: 2 GB
• Number of Processors Required: 1 vCPU
• Max. Concurrent SSL VPN Users: 10

But you can import it in VMware Workstation (tested on VMware Workstation 8.0.1). VM will be created with the following parameters: 1 CPU, 2GB DRAM, HDD 18GB IDE, 4 NICs, Display.

Initial configuration

The 1st boot takes time and then login prompt will appear:

login as: root
Using keyboard-interactive authentication.
Password: default
Last login: Tue Dec 2 16:29:11 2014
[root@localhost:NO LICENSE:Standalone] config #

Reconfiguring Management IP

The easiest way to reconfigure management IP address (the 1st one NIC on VM) is to use “config” utility:

[root@localhost:NO LICENSE:Standalone] config # config

Or you can use that way (manual modification using Traffic Management Shell tmsh).

As soon as you configure Management IP address (eth0) you can login SSH root/default or HTTPS (admin/admin).

Show current version:

[root@localhost:NO LICENSE:Standalone] config # tmsh
root@(localhost)(cfg-sync Standalone)(NO LICENSE)(/Common)(tmos)# show sys version

Sys::Version
Main Package
  Product BIG-IP
  Version 11.3.0
  Build 39.0
Edition VE Trial 11.3.0-HF1 (based on BIGIP 11.3.0HF6)
  Date Mon Mar 24 14:01:16 PDT 2014

root@(localhost)(cfg-sync Standalone)(NO LICENSE)(/Common)(tmos)#

Applying License

The next step is applying license. Go to HTTPS (admin/admin) > License > Base Registration Key: _your_key_ > Next.

SSH prompt will be changes as soon as you activate the license:

[root@localhost:Active:Standalone] config #

Then you will have to proceed with the “Setup Utility”. In “Network” tab you can choose “Finished” and then you will the the main GUI with all available options.

Power down VM

There’s the special article about how to shutdown F5 systems properly (like this).

I personally use the following method:

[root@f5-01:Active:Standalone] config # halt -p

Broadcast message from root (pts/0) (Tue Dec 2 23:23:53 2014):

The system is going down for system halt NOW!
[root@f5-01:Active:Standalone] config #

Then you can copy VM in initial state (with the license applied).
